Dominican Promoters of Preaching for the western region of the USA met at St Albert’s Priory in Oakland, CA, from September 15-17, 2005, to discuss their roles, the implementation of the National 2004-2008 Goals within their congregations, provinces and chapters, as well as on-going and potential collaborative efforts in the region. The meeting included representatives from the Western Province of the Friars, the Western Region of the Dominican Laity, and five Sisters' Congregations. They were joined on Friday afternoon by Sister Pauline Bouton (Mission San Jose) and high school students from Immaculate Conception Academy in San Francisco, who shared their experiences of the 2005 Dominican High School Preaching Conference in Adrian, MI.
Among the topics discussed at the annual meeting were preparation for liturgical preaching, our identity as preachers, preaching and justice, preaching through the arts - especially visual and literary arts, the use of the web, and opportunities for liturgical preaching in non-Eucharistic celebrations such as Vespers and Liturgy of the Word. For some years the Dominican Laity have offered preached reflections during Liturgy of the Word at the Phoenix Airport Chapel. The group also received reports regarding the potential USA Dominican Secretariat and future plans for Parable.
