Where is your kid going to camp?

If you have school-aged children, you've undoubtedly heard this question repeatedly at
drop-off/pick-up, little league practice, band rehearsal, etc. With the school year nearing an
end and the long months of summer soon upon us, parents are frantically starting to look for
activities that will engage and possibly enlighten their kids.

The Corporate Work Study team at ICA is looking forward to being part of the solution again this summer. For one week in June and a second week in August, we will be conducting our
second CampRey summer training session. We expect to host 100 girls - all of our incoming freshmen and transfer students.

While work training continues throughout the year at ICA, CampRey is our initial, immersion work study training program. All of our students take courses in two principal areas: hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills include hands-on training in the actual use of office equipment (copy and fax machines, scanners, phones) and frequently used office software (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Soft skills cover a range of less tangible but critically important topics that all relate to office etiquette and employee expectations.

The overall goal of CampRey is to build confidence. We are not expecting all of our students to become experts in the use of every phone system or customer billing program. We do expect that practical, rigorous, hands-on training will give our students the foundation to master their job assignments in short order. We hope that this work "jump start" will allow them to hit the ground running.

How can you help?

While we do our best to prepare the students to be productive members of your organizations, we are not with them in the workplace, Monday through Friday. You are. If you've noted any areas of deficiency in their performance, experience or training please let us know. While we appreciate the many compliments our student workers have received this past year, we also really need your constructive input. We can't fix problems that we don't know exist.

If you'd like to get even more involved, please consider teaching a section or two during CampRey. Available subjects include: phone etiquette, records management, filing, public speaking, business etiquette, business expectations, customer service and performance reviews. We have suggested course materials for all for these topics so there would be no need to develop your own curriculum.

Thanks again for your partnership. We hope to see many of you at CampRey.

Don't forget the sunscreen.

SPARTAN STORIES

Admissions

With record breaking application numbers, the full class of 2014 will join together with their families at ICA's
orientation on Saturday, May 15th.  All new families will get a chance to meet each other, visit with faculty, staff and our parent board.

Bumper Cars

The week before Easter, the school gathered in the gym for a lively bumper car
competition among senior Physics students using remote controlled vehicles they had built.

Building Bridges

CA is one of the participating high schools in the Engineers Alliances for the Arts (EAA) which was founded by a group of leading San Francisco Bay Area structural engineers. The program integrates a hands on approach to education. Professional structural engineers volunteer once a week for 8 weeks, to come into the classroom to teach high school students the basics of bridge construction.

Teams from the participating schools presented their bridges Saturday, April 24th in the auditorium of PG&E's historic building at 245 Market Street, San

Francisco. A panel of structural engineers, architects, contractors and artists judged the bridges based on both structural and aesthetic elements, including written and oral presentations.

Congratulations to all the participants!

Jordan Banez, Olivia Colindres, and Michelle Joya placed 2nd for Anacostia Bridge Scenario.
Annalisa Bouska, Rachel Kellerman, and Hilary Dalrymple placed second for Oakland Span Scenario
Stephanie Marcic and Josiane Cravotto placed 1st for Haiti Scenario.
Joanna Abot, Cindy Santisteban, and Stephany Cachet received a Special Award.

Blood Drive

Under the guidance of Mrs. Letty Cottrell, Student Activities Director, ICA recently held its
semi-annual blood drive. Winter months are a particularly difficult time to recruit donors so the Blood Centers of the Pacific was especially grateful to all who participated in making the drive a success. We acknowledge the generosity of the following seniors: Annalisa Bouska, Tiffany Jones, Rachel Kellerman, Nathalee Martinez, Jeanette Sanchez, Evelina Vega; juniors Irene Canales Wong, Sara Colby, Cindy Espinoza, Veronica Gomez, Blanca Manzo, Jessica Ruiz; sophomore Roxanna Orozco.

Koins for Kids

Spartans also contributed more than $1,100 in the annual "Koins for Kids" Drive that benefits Vision of Hope Schools, inner-city elementaries in Los Angeles and the Bay Area.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Mr. Straube, what's a CLIP?

CLIP (Corporate Leadership Intern Program) is an exciting new student leadership group that will work closely with ICA's work study office. CLIP is available for a select group of next year's juniors and seniors.  These students will represent ICA's Corporate Work Study Program and serve as role models for their fellow students.
CLIP members will be ambassadors of the CWSP program for current and prospective students, parents and sponsors.  CLIP members will also be responsible for helping with CampRey, attending sponsor presentations, and helping with various CWSP tasks and functions.

We are currently accepting applications for this elite progam until April 30th. Thanks to those of you who have written recommendations for your workers!

We will announce the members of the 2009-2010 Corporate Leadership Intern Program in the May newsletter.
