Mission District Murals
The students researched and presented information about the Latino people and social issues that Latin American countries are facing. They presented the information to their classmates and then went to visit the murals on Balmy St in the Mission District. The students had the option of creating a mural of their own, putting together a collage of images that came to mind, writing a poem inspired by what they saw, or writing a short story about an issue that was portrayed in one of the murals.
Quilts Jeanette Constanza: My mural was inspired by different murals on Balmy Street. I also got inspired by my Latino culture and my daily life.

Emily Hodgson: picture of Camino Duro: My drawing was based on a mural with the lyrics of Silvio Rodriguez. I felt that it showed that in times of darkness there is always a positive end. (It is read from the bottom to the top) Quilts

Quilts Kathy Romero: My poem is about a woman longing for her husband who is in the United States working hard to support his family.

Stephanie Borrego: My project was a story I imagined from looking at the mural. The mural was of a woman that was carrying a basket with the rainbow coming out and a man playing a guitar with the lyrics of Silvio Rodriguez coming out of the guitar.

Sonia Perez: My project represented my Latino culture and the Mission District. It was based on my ordinary life. Quilts

Quilts Jennifer Trana: My mural was inspired by the power of women.

Michelle A. Joya: Canvas painting: My mural was inspired by the mural called Those We Love We Remember located in the alley of Balmy St. The mural original mural is based on the loss of individuals because of AIDS. My mural includes butterflies and dragonflies representing the spirits of people that have died. The pathway of the big butterfly makes the bow of AIDS. It’s a simple mural to demonstrate the simplicity of life. Quilts
