"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door."

-Milton Berle

Dear ICA Family and Friends,

Congratulations to the Class of 2008! I am very proud of you wonderful Spartans! I ask the entire ICA community to join me in thanking and praising our God, for your spirit is truly that of building doors if the knock doesn’t come! Go for the doors and windows of your future and open them with confidence that you are truly a child of God, a gift to our world, a treasure we shall always cherish. Remember, you always have a home at ICA!

Congratulations to senior, Fatima Duran, our 2008 Gates Millennium Scholar! Yearly, the Gates Foundation awards 1000 scholarships nationwide for all expenses, tuition, room and board, to the college of choice for a bachelor’s degree and if the chosen field of study is math or science, the scholarship will pay all expenses through a PhD! Fatima will be attending USF in the fall! We are so proud of you!

This is ICA’s 5th Gates winner in five years! What an impressive record for this little school on the corner of 24th and Guerrero!

Please note a very important Calendar change: Next Tuesday, May 13 students will be dismissed at 3:05 instead of 1:05. We will have our Awards Assembly that day, plus a special assembly with school police liaison, Officer Lewis. The Awards Assembly will highlight year long student accomplishments as well as focus on senior awards. Officer Lewis will speak to the students about safety, especially during the upcoming summer months.

A big THANK YOU is in order to our Parent Guild Board who has faithfully served the ICA community during 2007-08!

2008-2009 Student Leadership

The present school year is dashing to a mad finish as graduation events, final exams, scheduling for new classes and dreams of summer swim in the heads of students and staff alike. A small group of Spartans are already mentally planning activities and events to outdo this year’s.

  • Francesca Bolivar, Aislinn Diaz, Leighton Giannini and Beverly Sackrider are our Associated Student Body officers who have pledged to fulfill their offices to the best of their ability.
  • Sandra Beltran, Dania Herrera, Maeve Ragusin and Janne Rivera have been voted as the new senior officers.
  • Caroline Dittman – president, Natasha Marston – vice president, Keilah Cabrera – secretary and Jessica Lucha – treasurer have been selected to lead the Junior class.
  • Our youngest students (soon to be sophomores) have chosen Veronica Gomez, Jessica Lacayo, Sophia Quinlan and Norma Sackrider to steer the helm for their class.
  • We look to these young women to hold high the torch of faith and leadership that they have inherited from their predecessors as we conclude our 125th anniversary year in the fall.

Poet in the Making

The International Library of Poetry has notified our freshman Becky Apolinario that an entire page of her poetry will be featured in a collection of new poems entitled The Best Poems and Poets of 2007. We congratulate Becky for receiving this honor which was awarded from thousands of entries.

Juniors Racing onto College

The Class of 2009 is intensely and seriously on the college track. Aislinn Diaz and Natalye Pronio both have been named Venture Scholars with a $40,000 scholarship at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. As the Executive Director of Undergraduate Admission states: “”As a Venture Scholar, you have taken the initiative to excel in your studies; your work …impress(es) us. You have demonstrated that you are poised to face the next challenge in your academic career and will be well prepared for college.” Leighton Giannini received a Dean’s Scholarship of $24,000 to attend Marietta College in Ohio. Marietta is ranked #6 in the Midwest by 2007’s US News and World Report. Our juniors are being curried by colleges even before they have been formally accepted during their senior year. We know that our “Queens” will quickly accumulate many other accolades.

Gabriela Mastro met the requirements to enter the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship /Qualifying Test. She is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of some 1.5 million entrants. This is the first step in identifying and honoring “academically talented young people throughout the nation”. Congratulations to each of, especially our own Gabby!

2008 Contest

This year’s Respect Life contest awarded two of ICA’s juniors with high commendations. Rebecca Mehrwein received Grand Prize at the 11th & 12th grade level and Janne Rivera received 1st place for the same division. Congratulations not only to them but to Sister Mary, their teacher, who guided and encouraged their award winning essays that remind all of us of the dignity of human life.

Honors and Pre-Calculus Classes – “Budding Builders”

April 19th found Ms. Tan, her students, teachers and families at the 8th Annual Engineers Alliance competition (3rd year of entry for ICA) along with other students from 5 Bay Area public high schools. After 8 weeks of working with professional engineers, ICA students exhibited their carefully designed and constructed bridges. Students were given three scenarios in which to locate their bridges: Hawaii, Napa and Chile. Not only were the bridges structurally sound but our Spartans delivered well prepared explanations of their compositions, rationale for choices and use of local environmental materials. A “Best in School” prize was awarded to seniors Helena Karnilowicz, Jamie Rimando, Tina Rosales and junior Gabby Mastro. Other participants included: seniors Jamie Chan, Grace Dalrymple, Lissette Feliciano, Francisca Guadamuz, Lauren Lacayo, Marlene Marrou, Ceciley McGriger, Katarina Ortega, Christina Ospital and Victoria Valencia; juniors Genevieve Bolinao, Aislinn Diaz, Leighton Giannini, Aja Navat, Aiofe O’Leary, Maeve Ragusin, Katlyn Roobian and Isabel Valle. We are deeply grateful to the structural engineering teachers who facilitated and guided our students in this project. We look forward to future engineers from the halls of ICA.

Community Outreach

ICA recently received a letter from Kelly Morrison of the Blood Centers of the Pacific: “On behalf of Blood Centers of the Pacific, as well as the many patients in the Bay Area, I would personally like to express our sincerest appreciation to Immaculate Conception Academy for sponsoring Blood Drives. The patients in need of blood and blood products across the Bay Area are very fortunate that your school supports the community blood program. During your most recent blood drive we welcomed 25 prospective donors, and, as a result approximately 66 patients will benefit. Blood Centers of the Pacific appreciates all the time and effort devoted to the blood drive by Letty Cottrell. Her enthusiasm and hard work proved to be an important catalyst to the success of this drive. We realize the work involved in recruiting and scheduling, especially first time donors. She has definitely proven to be a motivator and educator for people to become involved in the community.” We acknowledge the generosity of the following seniors: Jamie Chan, Stephanie Espinoza, La’Shanae Everette, Jimena Kirk, Angelica Leiva, Olivia McKendrick, Justina Melendez, Ashley Osorio, Enissa Rios, Tina Rosales and Theresa Stelter; juniors Ricka Apolinario, Roniesha Foster, Mercedes Herrera, Becky Laguardia, Thalia Leon, Veronica Vasquez, Christiana Yee and Carolina Zendejas; sophomores: Stephanie Borrego, Josiane Cravotto and Pamela Silva; freshman: Mariana Carvalho.

Office Depot Program

We recently received a credit for $23.68 from Office Depot’s 5% Back to Schools program. As of May 2008 and through these past years we have received $1,878.97. It’s a simple and easy method of earning credits for office supplies. Please remember to identify ICA as your designated school or use our ID # 70014023 when shopping there. Every dollar spent adds up. Thanks!

Got Lunch?

San Francisco announces its 2008 Summer Lunch Program serving FREE healthy lunches to everyone 18 and younger, regardless of income from June 23rd to August 15th. Call 311 or 211 after June 1st for a list of sites and serving times.

Benedict XVI’s Historic Visit to the U.S.

Opportunities seldom knock but when they do, it’s best to take advantage of them. Freshman Monica Michel wasn’t too excited about going to the East Coast for the Pope’s visit, but her parents knew (as parents usually do) what an experience it would be for her. Upon their insistence (and as Monica comments “she had no choice”) she joined her parish group and flew to Washington D.C. The Spirit (as in Holy Spirit) works in ways that we do not know and Monica indeed was caught up in the moment and powerful emotion of the thousands of Catholics gathered to welcome Jesus’ representative on earth. She came home tired but grateful and appreciative of the wonderful opportunity to give testament to Benedict’s message of hope, peace and reconciliation. May we all take to heart Benedict’s words and live more peacefully, more hopefully and truly make a difference in the lives of each person we meet each day of our lives.

Spartans of the Month

Leslie Paular, Senior
Leslie is a Woman of Faith, Leadership and Learning. As president of the Campus Ministry team and a member of BLOCK, she has proven to be extremely responsible, not only in completing tasks but also exhibiting a wonderful and willing spirit that says “Here I am. Send me.” Her steady and dependable manner inspires both teachers and peers. She is highly motivated, strives for academic excellence, gentle yet assertive, determined to learn and succeed. We know that her college years will be a reflection of that rich and fertile background that has been so carefully tended throughout her primary and secondary education.

Maeve Ragusin, Junior
Maeve exemplifies a Woman of Learning and Vision. She is very capable and is conscientious about her work. Her insights are articulated through her well developed writing. She learns easily and is a member of CSF and NHS. Maeve has been accepted into UC Davis’ Cosmos program for the summer and has earned college credit by taking community college courses. She has used her technology skills to assist in keeping ICA’s network of computers up to date and functioning. Basketball and tennis are sports in which she has participated. As a class officer she has not wavered from her duties and responsibilities. Maeve’s keen interests connect her to the world beyond the classroom. With her quiet self assurance she will be able to accomplish all that she sets out for herself.

Nathalee Martinez, Sophomore
Dedication and hard work reaps its benefits. In particular we congratulate Nathalee, as a Woman of Learning who has found that inner determination that has resulted in her outstanding improvement. She has cultivated a group of friends whose strong support of one another demonstrates itself in an “I can” attitude with a positive outlook. Nathalee is honest, straightforward and eager to continue in the tradition of ICA’s finest.

Norma Sackrider, Freshman
Norma models a Woman of Leadership, Learning and Community. Her ability to work collaboratively with others, her cheerful personality and friendly nature were assets instrumental in winning class office. She is ambitious and focused, uses resources wisely and from day one has had her eye on college. As a member of STRIVE she has diligently worked for college scholarship projects. For the past two years she has volunteered at the San Francisco Zoo and has applied to become a peer educator for Females Against Violence. Her generous spirit is reflected in all she does at ICA and the greater SF community.
